Skarl has provided R&D into novel technologies for environmental monitoring involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs / drones). To enable this, test flights was planned to be carried out in Barkarby Airfield, north of Kista, which offers a location designated for air hobby operations (site of Stockholms Radioflygklubb as well as Fenix paragliding club). This site is ideal as it offers a perfect testing ground due to a mix of buildings and varied vegetation (located at the south end of Järvafältets naturreservat).
By the end of the project, Skarl has been able to showcase remote live data streaming using Urban ICT Arena’s base infrastructure. The goal was, if the data generated, was of sufficiently high quality, that they will be disseminated in the form of academic publications. Skarl hase hit the limit of what can be done with low-priced sensors and with no budget and a phase 2 is to use more expensive sensors with higher resolution.
